La vie politique ivoirienne est rythmée depuis la mort du premier président de la Cote d’Ivoire, Felix Houphouet Boigny, par trois partis politiques et trois personnages: Henri Konan BEDIE (PDCI), Laurent GBAGBO (FPI-PPA-CI) et Alassane OUATTARA (RDR-RHDP). Tidjane THIAM a remplacé Henri Konan BEDIE à la téte du PDCI mais le tempo politique est toujours rythmé par la même intensité, la même hantise des lendemains ténébreux et les mêmes soubresauts, les mêmes spasmes sociaux: crises, tensions, rejets de candidatures, frayeurs et risques d’embrasements.
A la veille de la présidentielle decisive d’octobre 2025, nous avons choisi de vous présenter le trio qui tient trente millions d’ivoiriens en haleine.
Nous commencerons cette présentation par le plus ancien des trois sur la scene politique.
LAURENT GBAGBO.
Laurent Koudou Gbagbo, né le 31 mai 1945 à Gagnoa, Côte d’Ivoire, est un homme politique, historien et écrivain ivoirien, président de la République de Côte d’Ivoire de 2000 à 2011. Voici un résumé de sa biographie et de son parcours.
Origines et formation
• Famille : Issu de l’ethnie Bété, Laurent Gbagbo naît dans une famille modeste à Mama, près de Gagnoa. Il est le fils de Paul Koudou Gbagbo et de Marguerite Gado. Marié à Simone Ehivet depuis 1989, il a cinq enfants, dont un fils, Michel, issu d’une première union, et quatre filles avec Simone.
• Éducation : Gbagbo obtient un baccalauréat en philosophie au lycée classique d’Abidjan en 1965, puis une licence en histoire à l’université d’Abidjan (1969). Il décroche un doctorat en histoire à l’université Paris-Diderot en 1979 avec une thèse sur « Les fondements socio-économiques de la politique ivoirienne de 1960 à 1970 ».
Carrière académique et débuts politiques
• Enseignement : Gbagbo enseigne l’histoire au lycée classique d’Abidjan (1970-1971) et devient chercheur à l’Institut d’histoire, d’art et d’archéologie africains (1974-1980). Il est également maître-assistant à l’université d’Abidjan.
• Engagement politique : Militant syndical dès les années 1970, il critique le régime à parti unique de Félix Houphouët-Boigny. En 1971, il est emprisonné pour « enseignement subversif ». En 1982, il fonde clandestinement le Front Populaire Ivoirien (FPI), un parti d’opposition socialiste, et s’exile en France de 1985 à 1988 pour échapper à la répression.
Carrière politique
• Retour et ascension : De retour en Côte d’Ivoire en 1988, Gbagbo devient une figure clé de l’opposition. Il se présente à l’élection présidentielle de 1990 contre Houphouët-Boigny, obtenant 18 % des voix. En 1992, il est emprisonné après des manifestations étudiantes.
• Présidence (2000-2011) : Gbagbo remporte l’élection présidentielle de 2000 avec 59,4 % des voix face à Robert Guéï, dans un scrutin boycotté par Alassane Ouattara et Henri Konan Bédié. Son mandat est marqué par :
• Première guerre civile (2002-2007) : Une rébellion dans le nord, soutenue par Ouattara et des forces extérieures, divise le pays. Les accords de paix (Marcoussis en 2003, Ouagadougou en 2007) tentent de stabiliser la situation.
• Crise de 2010-2011 : Après l’élection présidentielle de 2010, Gbagbo conteste la victoire d’Alassane Ouattara (reconnu par la communauté internationale avec 54,1 % des voix). Il refuse de céder le pouvoir, déclenchant une seconde guerre civile. En avril 2011, il est arrêté à Abidjan par les forces pro-Ouattara, soutenues par la France et l’ONU.
Procès et exil
• CPI (2011-2019) : Transféré à la Cour Pénale Internationale (CPI) à La Haye en novembre 2011, Gbagbo est accusé de crimes contre l’humanité (meurtres, viols, persécutions) lors de la crise post-électorale de 2010-2011, qui a fait environ 3 000 morts. En janvier 2019, il est acquitté pour insuffisance de preuves, mais reste en Belgique en attendant un appel de la CPI. En 2021, la CPI confirme son acquittement.
• Retour en Côte d’Ivoire : Gbagbo retourne en Côte d’Ivoire le 17 juin 2021, accueilli par ses partisans. Il reçoit un passeport diplomatique et des avantages d’ancien président, bien que Ouattara ait initialement hésité à autoriser son retour.
Retour en politique
• Fondation du PPA-CI : En 2021, Gbagbo rompt avec le FPI et fonde le Parti des Peuples Africains – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI), un parti panafricaniste. Il se positionne comme une figure de l’opposition face à Alassane Ouattara.
• Élection 2025 : En mai 2025, Gbagbo est disqualifié de la liste électorale pour l’élection présidentielle d’octobre 2025, en raison de sa condamnation par contumace à 20 ans de prison en 2019 pour le « braquage » de la BCEAO lors de la crise de 2010-2011. Cette décision, confirmée par la Cour suprême, suscite des protestations de ses partisans, qui dénoncent une instrumentalisation politique.
Controverses
• Nationalisme et « ivoirité » : Gbagbo est accusé d’avoir exacerbé les tensions ethniques en promouvant le concept d’« ivoirité », qui marginalisait les Ivoiriens d’origine étrangère, notamment Ouattara.
• Crise de 2010-2011 : Son refus de reconnaître la victoire de Ouattara a conduit à une crise meurtrière, ternissant son image internationale.
• Condamnation nationale : Malgré son acquittement par la CPI, sa condamnation en Côte d’Ivoire pour l’affaire de la BCEAO reste un obstacle à sa candidature.
